MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has predicted a fresh spell of heat wave over eastern India from Thursday. The heat wave is likely over parts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand during the week, the weather department said. Hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Kerala till Thursday, it said.

 

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon is likely to advance to the south Andaman Sea, some parts of he southeast Bay of Bengal, and the Nicobar islands around Tuesday, it said. 

 

The weather bureau has issued a red alert in Gujarat for the second consecutive day on Wednesday because of very heavy rainfall in the state. A red alert indicates rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours. It has also predicted extremely heavy rainfall over Saurashtra and Kutch Wednesday. 

 

Heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of Uttarakhand and east Rajasthan on Wednesday and hailstorms over Uttarakhand till Thursday. The bureau sees a dust storm over west Rajasthan from Wednesday to Sunday.

 

The weather bureau said isolated heavy rainfall is likely over west Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday. Hailstorm is also likely over parts of central Maharashtra and Marathwada on Wednesday. The department has issued an orange alert in Uttarakhand, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, central Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa, and Marathwada. An orange alert indicates a rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours.

 

It has also predicted isolated heavy rain over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya on Wednesday. 

 

The weather department has issued agromet advisories, asking farmers to use hail nets and hail caps to prevent mechanical damage in vegetables and orchards. The department has asked farmers to drain out excess water from standing crops and vegetable fields.  End
