NEW DELHI - Indian armed forces launched a military operation "hitting terrorist infrastructure" in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed, the Ministry of Defence said in press statement early Wednesday morning.
Under 'Operation Sindoor', "nine sites have been targeted. Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution", the ministry said.
It added that it would brief the media on 'Operation Sindoor' at 1000 IST on Wednesday.
The Indian attack came in the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were killed. "We are living up to the commitment that those responsible for this attack will be held accountable," the ministry said.
Officials of the ministry also said all air defence units had been activated along the India-Pakistan border to tackle any eventuality.
Shortly after the strikes, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval spoke to US national security advisor and Secretary of State Marco Rubio and briefed him on the action taken.
Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Indian Air Force, while remaining within Indian airspace, had violated Pakistan's sovereignty using standoff weapons. Pakistan termed the attack "an unprovoked and blatant act of war". According to Pakistan, India's missiles struck across the international border in Muridke and Bahawalpur areas of Pakistan, and across the Line of Control in Kotli and Muzaffarabad.
The Pakistan army said eight people lost their lives in the attack and 35 sustained injuries.
Following the attack, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the "treacherous enemy has launched a cowardly attack on five locations within Pakistan". "This heinous act of aggression will not go unpunished," Sharif said on social media platform X.
?Pakistan, he said, reserved the absolute right to respond decisively to the "unprovoked Indian attack", and a resolute response was already underway.
Meanwhile, heavy exchange of artillery fire was reported across the Line of Control the and international border in Jammu & Kashmir. The Indian Army said three civilians were killed in the shelling.
"During the night of 06-07 May 2025, Pakistan Army resorted to arbitrary firing including Artillery shelling from posts across the Line of Control and IB opposite J&K. Three innocent civilians lost their lives in indiscriminate firing/shelling," an Indian Army official said.
The Army was responding in a proportionate manner, the official added. End
