Govt notifies cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims

NEW DELHI – The government has notified a scheme to provide cashless treatment of up to INR 150,000 to the victims of road accidents at designated hospitals across the country. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Monday released a notification announcing the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme, 2025, which will come into effect from May 5.

 

"Any person being a victim of road accident... occurring on any road, shall be entitled to cashless treatment at any designated hospital for an amount up to INR 150,000 per victim for a maximum period of seven days from the date of such accident," the notification reads. The victims can also avail treatment under this scheme at non-designated hospitals but for stabilisation purpose only. The payment to the hospitals will be made after the discharge of victims. The hospitals will have to raise a claim for the payment of the cost of treatment.

 

The State Road Safety Council was declared as the nodal agency for the implementation of the scheme in its respective state. However, the state government may specify any other entity as nodal agency with prior approval of the Centre, the notification reads. 

 

The nodal agency is assigned to ensure the successful implementation of the scheme. The State Road Safety Council will coordinate with National Health Authority for adoption and utilisation of the portal for on boarding of designated hospitals, treatment of victims, payment to the designated hospital on treatment and related matters. It will also coordinate with State Health Agency to designate hospitals and to implement measures required for the detection and prevention of fraud or misuse of the scheme or its benefits.

 

According to the notification, the central government will constitute a steering committee to monitor the implementation of the scheme for cashless treatment. The committee will have 11 members and the secretary of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will be the chairperson. The members will be from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, National Informatics Centre and General Insurance Council, among others. End
