NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the state governments and public authorities that come under the Delhi-National Capital Region for data on electric vehicles hired or purchased by them in the last five years. The top court's direction came after it had asked states that come under the Delhi National Capital Region in January to consider whether a policy decision could be taken to ensure that a substantial number of vehicles purchased by the government, its bodies and organisations are electric.
Along with Delhi, the National Capital Region comprises parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. On May 2, the Commission for Air Quality Management in National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas also gave an advisory to the governments, public sector undertakings, and public institutions in Delhi-National Capital Region to take the lead and initiate policy measures for transition to cleaner mode of vehicles and mandate future purchase and hiring or leasing of only such vehicles.
In Tuesday's hearing, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the commission, said that an office memorandum issued by the Ministry of Finance has encouraged government departments to switch to electric mobility from petrol and diesel cars in respect of vehicles taken on lease or hired for official purpose. The government is trying to create an ecosystem to accelerate uptake of electric mobility in the country, she added.
The top court was hearing a case on rising air pollution levels in Delhi-National Capital Region and the issue of stubble burning in the neighbouring states. The top court Tuesday noted the direction issued by the Delhi government to enforce a complete ban on manufacture, sale and storage, and bursting of all kinds of firecrackers in Delhi throughout the year. It asked the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana to issue similar directions in their states regarding firecracker ban. End
