NEW DELHI – UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres Monday urged both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint and "avoid military confrontation which could easily spin out of control". Guterres' comments came at a time when tensions between both the countries have escalated after 26 civilians were killed in Pahalgam by Pakistan-based terrorists.
"Make no mistake: A military solution is no solution. It is also essential--especially at this critical hour--to avoid a military confrontation that could easily spin out of control. Now is the time for maximum restraint and stepping back from the brink," Guterres said. He also said the UN is ready to support any initiative that promotes de-escalation. "And I offer my good offices to both governments in the service of peace. The United Nations stands ready to support any initiative that promotes de-escalation, diplomacy, and a renewed commitment to peace," he said.
The UN secretary general "strongly condemned" the attack and said, "...those responsible (for terrorist attack) must be brought to justice through credible and lawful means," he said.
Tensions escalated between the two neighbours after a terrorist attack in South Kashmir's Pahalgam on Apr. 22, in which 25 tourists and one local resident were killed. India has accused Pakistan of backing the terrorists and initiated retaliatory steps, including suspension of Indus Waters Treaty. In response, Pakistan announced the suspension of trade and bilateral agreements with India, including the Simla Agreement of 1972.
Ever since the Pahalgam attack, the Pakistan army has constantly violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. According to Indian Army, the Pakistan army resorted to unprovoked small arms firing for 11th consecutive night on late Sunday night. "During the night of 04 -05 May 2025, Pakistan Army posts resorted to unprovoked small arms fire across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajauri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army responded promptly and proportionately," an Army official said on Monday. End
