NEW DELHI – Russian President Vladimir Putin has accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation to visit India later this year for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi, the Kremlin said Monday. "The Indian leader reiterated his invitation to the Russian President to visit India for the traditional annual bilateral summit. The invitation was accepted with gratitude," the Kremlin said in a statement.

Putin held a telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Modi Monday. During the conversation, Modi congratulated Putin and the Russian population on the upcoming 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War. The two leaders held a conversation on the bilateral relations and emphasised the strategic nature of Russian-Indian relations of a special privileged partnership. "These relations are not subject to external influence and continue to develop dynamically in all directions," the Kremlin said.

In July last year, Prime Minister Modi visited Moscow to attend the 22nd Annual Bilateral Summit. Following the meeting between Putin and Modi, both sides set a target to achieve bilateral trade of $100 billion by 2030.

Kremlin also said that Putin expressed condolence over the death of Indian citizens in the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on Apr. 22. "Both sides emphasised the need for an uncompromising fight against terrorism in any form," the Kremlin said.

At least 25 tourists and one Kashmiri local were killed in a terrorist attack at the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam. India has accused Pakistan of backing the terrorists and initiated several retaliatory steps, including suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Besides, India closed its airspace for Pakistan-registered as well as Pakistani-owned and operated airlines, suspended trade, revoked the visas of Pakistani nationals, and cut the strength of Pakistan's High Commission in New Delhi. In response, Pakistan has announced the suspension of trade and all bilateral agreements with India, including the Simla Agreement of 1972.

Over the weekend, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke to his Indian and Pakistani counterparts to defuse the situation by political and diplomatic means on a bilateral basis, in conformity with the 1972 Simla Agreement and the 1999 Lahore Declaration.  End
