--RBI: Held 879.59 tn of gold as on Mar 31, up from 854.73 tn as on Sept 30

 

NEW DELHI – The Reserve Bank of India continued to add to its gold assets in the second half of 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), buying 24.86 tonnes of the yellow metal in Oct-Mar to take its total gold holdings to 879.59 tonnes. On a year-on-year basis, the Indian central bank's gold holdings were up 7%, as per data released Monday.

 

At 879.59 tonnes, the value of RBI's gold holdings as of Mar. 31 was $78.18 billion, or 11.7% of its total foreign exchange reserves, up from 9.3% at the end of September. As per latest data, the RBI's gold holdings stood at $84.37 billion as of Apr. 25, accounting for 12.3% of the reserves.

 

In Oct-Mar, the RBI increased the amount of gold it held domestically by a mere 1.53 tonnes after the past one-and-a-half years saw a huge amount of the yellow metal being brought to Indian shores. For nearly 20 years, the RBI held 292 tonnes of gold domestically, with the amount kept with the Bank of England and the Bank for International Settlements rising from 65 tonnes in September 2003 to 451.54 tonnes as at the end of September 2021. The RBI increased the amount of its gold kept in the country by 3.52 tonnes in FY22, 5.28 tonnes in FY23, 107.21 tonnes in FY24, and 102.15 tonnes in the first half of FY25.

 

The RBI said on Monday that as on Mar. 31, it held 511.99 tonnes of gold domestically, 348.62 tonnes of gold with the Bank of England and the Bank for International Settlements, and 18.98 tonnes in the form of gold deposits.  End
