NEW DELHI – Russia's President Vladimir Putin Monday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed full support to India in the fight against terrorism, Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on the social media platform X. Condemning the terrorist attack at Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir which claimed 26 lives, Putin "emphasised that the perpetrators of the heinous attack and their supporters must be brought to justice", Jaiswal said.
The spokesperson said Putin and Modi reiterated their commitment to deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Modi conveyed greetings to Putin on the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day and invited him for the India-Russia Annual Summit to be held in India later in the year.
At least 25 tourists and one Kashmiri man were killed in a terrorist attack at the Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam on Apr. 22. While a hunt is on to nab the perpetrators of the crime, India has accused Pakistan of backing the terrorists and initiated several retaliatory steps. It has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, closed its airspace for Pakistan-registered as well as Pakistani-owned and operated airlines, suspended trade, revoked the visas of Pakistani nationals, and cut the strength of Pakistan's High Commission in New Delhi.
In response, Pakistan has announced the suspension of trade and all bilateral agreements with India, including the Simla Agreement of 1972, and closed its airspace for Indian-owned and operated airlines. Islamabad has also warned that any attempt to divert or stop the flow of Indus water to Pakistan would be considered an act of war. End
