MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy rainfall in 13 states--Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh--and the Vidarbha region for Monday. An orange alert indicates a rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in 24 hours.
The weather bureau said rainfall accompanied with thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds is likely to continue over northwest India during the next seven days. Similar weather conditions are also seen over central India till Wednesday, and a decrease in intensity thereafter.
The weather bureau said heavy rain is likely in parts of Rajasthan till Wednesday, and over Uttarakhand on Tuessday and Wednesday. It said isolated hailstorm is likely over parts of northwest India till Tuesday. Dust-storm is very likely over parts of Rajasthan during the week.
The Gujarat region is likely to receive very heavy rainfall on Tuesday and heavy rains over Gujarat state are likely till Thursday. Hailstorm is also likely over parts of west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh Monday, and east Madhya Pradesh till Wednesday.
The weather bureau also said isolated hailstorm is very likely over Telangana Monday. Heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Rayalaseema, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Kerala, and Mahe is likely during the week.
It also sees heavy rainfall over northeast India during Tuesday and Thursday. Fairly widespread to widespread light or moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds with speed reaching 30-40 kilometres per hour is likely over northwest India during the next seven days.
Under the influence of hailstorm, heavy rain, and gusty winds, the weather bureau issued agromet advisories and asked farmers in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh to drain excess water from standing crop and vegetable crops. It has also asked farmers to use hail nets and hail caps to prevent mechanical damage in vegetables and standing crop fields.
Hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha from Thursday till Sunday. End
