NEW DELHI – In its latest retaliation for the terror attacks in Pahalgam, the Indian government has prohibited all direct and indirect import of goods from Pakistan, the Directorate General Of Foreign Trade said in a release late Friday. The measure comes into effect immediately and will stay in place until further orders, it said.

"The restriction is imposed in the interest of national security and public policy," the release said. Any exception to this prohibition shall require prior approval of the government of India, it added.

"These imports were limited to niche items like figs ($78,000), Basil and Rosemarry herbs ($18,856), and Himalayan pink salt. India doesn't depend on Pakistani goods, so the economic impact is minimal," said Ajay Srivastava, founder at Global Trade Research Initiative. "However, Pakistan still needs Indian products and may continue accessing them through third countries through recorded and unrecorded routes."

India and Pakistan have been at loggerheads following a terrorist attack at a tourist spot near Pahalgam town in Jammu and Kashmir on Apr. 22, in which at least 26 people were killed. Tensions have been rife with the Indian government accusing Pakistan of supporting militants. Both the nations have taken a raft of measures against each other, with India putting the critical Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance and Pakistan closing its airspace to Indian airlines.

In Apr-Jan of the financial year ended March, India imported merchandise goods worth $420,000 from Pakistan, down 85% on year, latest data from the commerce ministry showed. In the same period, India exported goods worth $448 million to Pakistan.  End
