NEW DELHI – The Indian government is likely to push for economic sanctions against Pakistan at various global platforms like the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and other multilateral development banks, a government official said. Tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad have flared up since last week after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, a popular tourist site in Kashmir.

The terrorist attack in Pahalgam claimed 26 lives, and left many injured. In the last one week, there have also been multiple instances of violation of ceasefire by the Pakistani Army along the Line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir.

India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, closed the Attari border check post, revoked the visas of Pakistani nationals, and took several other measures, accusing Pakistan of backing terrorists. The Pakistan government, on the other hand, has suspended bilateral agreements with India, including the Simla Agreement of 1972. Islamabad has also suspended trade with India and closed its airspace to Indian-owned or Indian-operated airlines.  End
