NEW DELHI – Mills in India produced 25.7 million tonnes of sugar as of Wednesday, according to the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association. As of Wednesday, only 19 of the 534 sugar mills in the country were crushing cane, ISMA said.

These mills are expected to continue operations for another seven to 10 days, it added. While only one mill was crushing cane in Maharashtra, about 10 mills were operating in Uttar Pradesh. "Improved yield of plant cane has enhanced the cane availability in Uttar Pradesh, enabling some mills to continue their operations," ISMA said.

As of Wednesday, Uttar Pradesh had produced 9.24 million tonnes of sugar. "Improved sugar recovery in the second half of the season has resulted in better output of sugar," ISMA said.

In Maharashtra, sugar output was 8.1 million tonnes as of Wednesday. Of the 200 mills that started operations this season, only 1 mill in Pune is expected to remain in operation till the second week of May, ISMA said.

The mills crushing cane in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are expected to contribute to sugar production in the major crushing season in May. During the special crushing season from June or July to September, some factories in South Karnataka and Tamil Nadu will restart their operations, adding to sugar production in 2024-25 (Oct-Sep), it added.

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu collectively contribute around 400,000-500,000 tonnes of sugar in the special season. For the entire season ending September, ISMA pegs sugar output at 26.4 million tonnes, down 17.2% against 31.90 million tonnes last year.

As of Wednesday, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat produced 4.04 million tonnes, 475,000 tonnes, and 892,000 tonnes sugar, respectively.

While ISMA welcomed the recent hike in fair and remunerative prices of sugarcane for the upcoming season 2025-26 (Oct-Sep), it urged the government to align fair prices of cane with the minimum selling price of sugar to improve mills' liquidity and timely payment to farmers. On Wednesday, the Cabinet approved a hike of INR 15 in the fair and remunerative price for sugarcane for the 2025-26 (Oct-Sep) sugar season to INR 355 per 100 kg. From October, sugar mills will pay farmers the revised fair prices for sugarcane purchases. The current minimum selling price of the sweetener is INR 31 per kg, unchanged since 2019.

"While the increase in FRP rightly benefits farmers, it also raises the cost of raw material for mills. Ensuring that the selling price of sugar and ethanol procurement prices are adjusted proportionately would allow mills to absorb these increased costs without financial strain," ISMA said.

Increasing the minimum selling price of sugar would also encourage continued investment in ethanol production, which supports India's clean energy goals and reduces dependency on fossil fuels, ISMA said. End
