MUMBAI - Bajaj Auto Ltd.'s monthly sales volume in April fell 6% on year after reporting a rise in the previous three months. This was largely due to a 7% fall in two-wheeler sales volume, which also saw a year-on-year fall after three months of rise.

Bajaj Auto's total sales in April, including two-wheelers and commercial vehicles, fell to 365,810 units as compared with 388,256 units in same month a year ago. The 6% fall in April was worse than analysts' expectations. Brokerage Nomura had expected the sales to decline 4% in April, while Nuvama Institutional Equities had estimated sales to be flat.

The company released the figures to exchange before the market opened Friday. Shares of the company opened lower and at 1126 IST, were trading 1.3% down at INR 7,926 on the National Stock Exchange.

Bajaj Auto's business in India struggled, while exports continued to see year-on-year growth. Exports rose on year for the 17th straight month, increasing 4% in April to 145,195 units. Its domestic sales in India remained poor with volumes declining 11% to 220,615 units after seeing marginal growth in March.

Sales volume from its two-wheeler segment fell 13% in India, but rose nearly 4% in international markets. Overall, it sold 317,937 two-wheelers in April, down 7% on year. Sales from its commercial vehicles segment, which includes three-wheelers, was also mixed with volumes marginally lower in India but exports rising nearly 11% on year. Overall, it sold 47,873 commercial vehicles in April, up 3% on year.

For the December quarter, the company reported a net profit of INR 21.09 billion on revenue of 128.07 billion.  End
