MUMBAI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. Thursday reported higher year-on-year sales for April, fuelled by higher exports and increasing preference among Indians for utility vehicles. The tally, however, is the company's lowest in the first four months of calendar 2025. It also reflects a fourth consecutive month of decline in sales on a month-on-month basis.
Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 179,791 units in April, up 7% from 168,089 units sold a year ago. Within this, domestic sales accounted for an 84% share with 151,880 units, up 4% on year. Despatches to dealerships overseas saw a nearly 26% annual uptick with 27,911 units exported during the month. At home, all segments recorded a better on-year performance in April, barring the passenger car category.
The passenger car segment logged in a nearly 2% on-year fall in April with total sales of 68,244 units. Within this, the mini and compact sub-segment saw a marginal dip with sales of 67,923 units during the month, compared to 68,472 units a year ago. Sales of mini cars – Alto and S-Presso – declined 45% on year to 6,332 units while sales of compact cars improved 8% to 61,591 units. The compact car category comprises models such as Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR. Sales of the now-discontinued Ciaz, in its mid-size category, totalled 321 units in April, down 63% on year.
April Despatches of Maruti Suzuki's utility vehicles rose over 4% to 59,022 units from 56,553 in the year-ago period. Sales of Eeco, the only van sold by the company, contracted 5% on year to 11,438 units. The company sold 3,349 units of its Super Carry light commercial vehicle during the month, up 34% on year. Sales to other original equipment manufacturers grew 79% on year in April to 9,827 units.
For the quarter ended March, Maruti Suzuki had reported a net profit of INR 37.11 billion on revenues of INR 406.74 billion. On Wednesday, shares of the company closed at INR 12,257 on the National Stock Exchange, up 3.5% from the previous close. End
