MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has forecast above-normal rainfall in May, at 109% of the long-period average. The weather bureau said normal- to above-normal rainfall is likely over many parts of the country, except some parts of northwest, central, east and northeast India where below-normal rainfall is likely in May.

 

The long-period average rainfall over the country during May is normally about 61.4 mm, based on data of 1971-2020, the weather agency said in its monthly forecast.

 

In terms of temperature, the weather bureau has forecast above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures over most parts of India in May. Above-normal heatwave days are likely over many parts of the northwest and central India and adjoining east India. The number of heatwave days is likely to be above normal over many parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and some parts of Gujarat, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and adjoining Telangana and north Karnataka, according to the agency. "Normally the heat wave prevails over northern plains, central India and adjoining areas of peninsular India for about three days in the month of May," it said.

 

Parts of south peninsular and east India are likely to see normal to below normal temperatures in May, according to the forecast. The weather bureau also sees above normal heatwave days over most of India in May.

 

In April, the country received 38.7 mm rainfall, 1.5% below normal, the weather department said. Rainfall in south peninsula India was 60.4% above normal at 54.4 mm in April and in central India it was 73.3% above normal at 15.9 mm. Rainfall in east and northeast India was 21% below normal at 97.5 mm in April. Rainfall in northwest India was 27.5% below normal at 23.1 mm in April, it said.

 

The IMD said El Nino-Southern Oscillation neutral conditions are present over the equatorial Pacific region. The weather department sees similar conditions prevail during the monsoon season. Neutral La Nina conditions are seen at present across India, it said. Neutral Indian Ocean Dipole conditions are prevailing over the Indian Ocean and will continue during the monsoon season, the weather bureau said.  End
