India gets 14% below normal rainfall in week ended Wed, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received an average rainfall of 9.0 millimetres in the week ended Wednesday, 14% below the normal of 10.5 millimetres for the week, the India Meteorological Department said. Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, the rainfall was less than the long-period average in two regions, the same as the long-period average in one and above the long-period average in the fourth region, the weather bureau said.
The rainfall was 116% above the long-period average in central India at 5.4 millimetres during the week, while it was the same as the long-period average in South Peninsular India at 9.7 millimetres. Rainfall in east and northeast India was 6% below the long-period average during the week at 32.9 millimetres, and it was 98% below the long-period average at 0.2 millimetres in northwest India, the agency said.
Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was 'large deficient' in 12 and 'deficient' in four during the week. Rainfall was 'large excess' in seven subdivisions and 'excess' in one. Seven subdivisions received normal rains, and five subdivisions received no rain at all during the week.
Since Mar. 1, India has received 58.9 millimetres of rainfall, 15% below the normal of 69.2 millimetres for the period. End
