NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a hike of INR 15 in the fair and remunerative price for sugarcane for the 2025-26 (Oct-Sep) sugar season to INR 355 per 100 kg. From October, sugar mills will pay farmers the revised fair prices for sugarcane purchases.
The revised fair prices of cane are for a basic recovery rate of 10.25%, the Cabinet said in a release. Mills also have to pay a premium of INR 3.46 per 100 kg for each 0.1% increase in recovery over and above 10.25%, and a reduction of INR 3.46 per 100 kg for each 0.1% decrease in recovery, it added. Sugar recovery rate is the percentage of sugar extracted from sugarcane while processing.
For sugarcane fetching the recovery rate below 9.5%, farmers are assured of a fair and remunerative price of INR 329.05 per 100 kg for 2025-26, the release said. The sugar sector affects the livelihood of 50 million farmers and families, and around 500,000 workers are directly employed in sugar mills. End
