NEW DELHI – The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued notices to the Board of Control for Cricket India and others on a petition by children's magazine Champak's publisher Delhi Press Patra Prakashan Pvt. Ltd. The publisher had filed a permanent injunction suit against the use of the name 'Champak' for the robotic dog in the Indian Premier League, citing infringement of its registered trademark.
Delhi Press argued that the Indian Premier League was a commercial venture and the cricketing board was advertising, marketing and earning through its robotic dog. Use of the name 'Champak' amounts to tarnishment, it argued, adding that this was unauthorised use of the term and the cricketing board was taking unfair advantage.
Contesting the claim of Delhi Press, the cricketing board said 'Champak' was the name of a flower. According to the BCCI, the name was associated with a character in the Hindi situational comedy TV show Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah. The high court will hear the case next on Jul. 9.
Meanwhile, the final cricket match of the Indian Premier League for 2025 is slated for May 25.
The robotic dog was introduced by global technology leader wTVision in collaboration with Omnicam and BCCI. It was designed to resemble a playful pet and gave a fresh and emotional layer to live sports coverage. Champak reacts in real time with players, umpires and fans by performing gestures such as handshakes, jumps and heart signs. Recently, a video of the robotic dog in action during a match went viral.
