NEW DELHI – Pakistan has "credible intelligence" that India may carry out military action against it in the next 24-36 hours on the pretext of "baseless and concocted allegations of involvement in Pahalgam incident," Pakistan's Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar said in a post on microblogging site X. "Indian self assumed hubristic role of Judge, Jury and Executioner in the region is reckless and vehemently rejected. Pakistan has been the victim of terrorism itself and truly understands the pain of this scourge," Tarar wrote.

Tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours escalated after a group of terrorists shot at individuals at the popular tourist site of Baisaran meadow in south Kashmir's Pahalgam. The attack resulted in the death of 25 tourists and a Kashmiri local, and left many injured.

Tarar said in the same post that Pakistan open heartedly offered a credible, transparent and independent investigation by a neutral commission of experts to ascertain the truth but unfortunately, rather than pursuing the path of reason, India has apparently decided to tread the dangerous path of irrationality and confrontation, which will have catastrophic consequences for the complete region and beyond. "Evasion of credible investigations is in itself sufficient evidence exposing India's real motives," he wrote.

He called on the international community to remain alive to the reality that the onus of escalatory spiral and its ensuing consequences shall squarely lie with India. "Pakistan reiterates that any such military adventurism by India would be responded to assuredly and decisively," he wrote.

Meanwhile, Minister of External Affiars S. Jaishankar wrote on X that the Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres called to express "unequivocal condemnation" of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and agreed on the importance of accountability. "India is resolved that the perpetrators, planners and backers of this attack are brought to justice," he wrote.

Following the attack, there has been an escalation in tensions between the two neighbours. India held Pakistan responsible for backing the terrorists and downgraded its ties, cancelled the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, revoked visas of Pakistani nationals, and expelled diplomats. In retaliation, Islamabad announced suspension of all bilateral agreements and trade with India, and barred all Indian-owned or Indian-operated airlines from using Pakistani airspace.

Since the attack, Pakistani army has also violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control in Jammu & Kashmir for the fifth consecutive night on Monday. The Pakistani army resorted to unprovoked small arms firing across the Line of Control in Kupwara and Baramula districts, as well as the Akhnoor sector on Sunday and Monday nights, to which the Indian Army responded in a measured and effective manner.

On Monday, Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had told Reuters in Islamabad that an "Indian incursion is imminent", and that his country's army had been reinforced. Asif said that Pakistan is on high alert and it would only use nuclear weapons if there is direct threat to the country's existence.  End
