NEW DELHI – The Centre Tuesday mandated the certification of green hydrogen production from renewable resources to ensure transparency, traceability, and market credibility, according to a press statement.
The mandate, issued under 'Green Hydrogen Certification Scheme of India' (GHCI), has been released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. Under this, green hydrogen producers will have to ensure their emission intensity in the production process does not exceed the specified standards.
Micro, small, and medium enterprises have shown strong interest in entering the green hydrogen sector, particularly in areas such as component manufacturing, operations and maintenance services, and rural hydrogen generation, according to the statement.
This comes as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission which was launched on Jan. 4, 2023, aiming to produce 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. The scheme was launched with an initial outlay of INR 197.5 billion, of which INR 175 billion has been kept as incentives for producing green hydrogen/ammonia and manufacturing electrolysers. Of the INR 175 billion incentive outlay, INR 130.5 billion is for the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives, while INR 44.4 billion has been allotted for incentives for electrolyser manufacturing.
