Global March alumina production up 10% on month, says aluminium institute

MUMBAI – Global alumina production rose nearly 10% on month to 12.9 million tonnes in March, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. Alumina output was up 5.4% from 12.26 million tonnes in the corresponding period last year.
The average daily global alumina production fell to 416,800 tonnes in March from the revised 420,400 tonnes in February, the data showed. Alumina production in China was 7.83 million tonnes in March, up 10.7% on month. The country's output, which accounted for over 60% of global alumina production, was up 12% from a year ago, the data showed.
In the Oceania region, alumina output rose to 1.5 million tonnes in March from 1.3 million tonnes in February. In Africa and Asia, excluding China, alumina production rose to 1.15 million tonnes last month from 1.07 million tonnes in February. In Europe, production rose by 72,000 tonnes to 643,000 tonnes in March and output in South America rose 6% on month to 999,000 tonnes, the data showed.
According to the data, global primary aluminium production rose 10% to 6.23 million tonnes in March. At 1230 IST, the most-active May aluminium contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India was up 0.5% at INR 235 per kg. On the London Metal Exchange, the three-month aluminium contract was up 0.1% at $2,437 per tonne. End
