NEW DELHI – China on Monday urged India and Pakistan to "show restraint" and resolve their differences through dialogue after tensions between the two nuclear-powered nations escalated in the aftermath of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on Tuesday.
"China hopes that the two sides will exercise restraint, work in the same direction, handle relevant differences properly through dialogue and consultation, and jointly maintain regional peace and stability," Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said.
On whether China would prefer to be part of an international investigation into the Pahalgam terrorist attack, as suggested by Pakistan, the spokesperson said, "China welcomes all measures that will help cool down the current situation and supports carrying out fair and just investigation..."
According to reports, Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif suggested that Russia or China or even Western countries could play a very positive role in resolving this crisis, and could even set up an investigation team to probe the Pahalgam terrorist attack. He also said that Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had proposed an international investigation.
On Tuesday, a group of terrorists shot at individuals at the popular tourist site of Baisaran meadow in south Kashmir's Pahalgam. The attack resulted in the death of 25 tourists and a Kashmiri local, and left many injured.
Following the attack, there has been an escalation in tensions between the two neighbours. India downgraded its ties with Pakistan, cancelled the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, revoked visas of Pakistani nationals, and expelled diplomats. In retaliation, Islamabad announced suspension of all bilateral agreements and trade with India, and barred all Indian-owned or Indian-operated airlines from using Pakistani airspace.
Meanwhile, Pakistani forces have reportedly carried out unprovoked cross-border firing across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian Army officials said that "during the night of Apr 27-28, Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small arms fire across the Line of Control in areas opposite Kupwara and Poonch districts".
