NEW DELHI – The Jammu & Kashmir Assembly on Monday passed a resolution condemning the terrorist attack in south Kashmir's Pahalgam on Tuesday, which claimed 26 lives. The Assembly convened a special session on Monday to condemn the terrorist attack, which targeted tourists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam. The resolution termed it an attack on 'Kashmiriyat'.

Addressing the Assembly, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said he wouldn't resort to cheap politics in the aftermath of Pahalgam attack, and wouldn't use the incident to exert pressure on the Centre for statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. "We have talked about statehood in the past and will continue doing so in the future as well, but it will be shameful on my part if I go and tell the Centre that 26 people have died, now give me statehood," Abdullah said.

In August 2019, the Parliament had passed a constitutional amendment Bill, abrogating the special status of Jammu & Kashmir and bifurcating the state into two Union territories — Jammu and Kashmir with an assembly, and Ladakh without one. Elections to the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly were held in 2024 for the first time after abrogation of special status granted by Article 370 of the Constitution. The National Conference, in alliance with the Congress and others, formed a government in the Union territory. However, the Centre through the lieutenant governor exercises authority on several aspects of governance in the Union territory, including its security.

Referring to the widespread protests in Kashmir against Tuesday's attack, Abdullah said this was the beginning of a movement against militancy in the Valley. "We have to be very cautious that this movement should not be harmed by our actions. We can control militancy by guns, but can't end it without people's support. This is the beginning that... In the last 26 years, I have never seen people come out to protest against an attack like this," Abdullah said.

The Jammu & Kashmir chief minister also said that an attack of such a large scale had been carried out after 21 years in Baisaran.

In a separate development, members of the Congress youth wing held a protest against the attack near the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi on Monday. According to reports, police have detained a number of protestors.  End
