IMD issues orange alert for east India on Mon on rainfall, thunderstorms

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Monday, warning of a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds with speeds of 40–50 kilometre per hour, gusting up to 60 km per hour, across east India, east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh. An orange alert indicates rainfall between 115.6 millimetre and 204.4 mm within 24 hours. The weather bureau said that these weather conditions are expected to persist till Friday.

 

Hailstorms are likely in parts of east Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand on Monday, and in Odisha on Tuesday. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Bihar on Monday and across Odisha from Tuesday to Thursday.

 

A similar spell of wet weather, including thunderstorm, lightning, and gusty winds with speed reaching 40-50 km per hour, is predicted over northeast India over the next five days. Thundersqualls are expected in Assam and Meghalaya till Tuesday, with heavy rainfall likely in the region until then. Very heavy rainfall is specifically predicted for Assam and Meghalaya on Monday, the department said. However, the intensity of rainfall over northeast India is likely to decrease Tuesday onwards, the weather agency said.

 

In south India, a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds with speed reaching 30-40 km per hour gusting to 50 km per hour is likely in the next seven days. Similar weather conditions with thundersqualls are also seen over north interior Karnataka till Friday, the weather bureau said.

 

Dust storms are likely over parts of east Uttar Pradesh till Wednesday, over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi on Thursday, and over Rajasthan on Thursday and Friday, the department said. A wet spell along with thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds reaching 30-40 km per hour is expected across the western Himalayan region and plains of northwest India from Wednesday to Sunday.

 

The weather bureau has warned of heatwaves in parts of north India till Wednesday, over Haryana and Punjab till Tuesday and Wednesday, and in Saurashtra and Kutch till Tuesday. Hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over south India, Gujarat, Saurashtra, Kutch, and Marathwada till Friday, the department said.  End
