Very heavy rain to continue over northeast India till Sunday, says IMD

MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department Saturday said heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over northeast India till Sunday, owing to an upper air cyclonic circulation over central Assam and another over east Bihar and adjoining sub-Himalayan West Bengal in lower tropospheric levels.
The weather bureau said there was a western disturbance and a cyclonic circulation over southwest Rajasthan and its neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels. These are likely to cause light or moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm over east India, east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and east Uttar Pradesh till Wednesday. It also sees lightning and strong winds with speeds reaching 40-50 km per hour gusting to 60 km per hour at these places.
Thundersquall, when wind speed reaches 50-60 km per hour, is likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand till Tuesday. Hailstorm is likely over east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on Sunday and Monday.
Heavy rainfall is likely over a few parts of Sikkim, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Bihar, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha from Sunday to Tuesday. Similar weather conditions are also likely over Kerala and Mahe on Monday and Tuesday. Hailstorm is also likely over parts of interior Karnataka during the weekend.
The western disturbance is likely to cause thunderstorm, lightning, and strong winds speeds reaching 30-40 km per hour are likely over western Himalayan region and plains of northwest India on Saturday. A fresh spell of rainfall along with thunderstorm, lightning, and strong winds with speeds reaching 30-40 km per hour are likely in the region from Tuesday till Saturday.
The weather bureau has forecast heatwave in parts Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha during the weekend. Warm night conditions are likely in parts of west Rajasthan till May 2 and Telangana till Sunday.
Hot and humid weather is likely in Bihar, Jharkhand, Kerala, Mahe, Marathwada, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema during the weekend, the bureau said. End
