Pakistan violates ceasefire at LoC, India retaliates; Army chief visits J&K

NEW DELHI – Several incidents of ceasefire violations by Pakistan Army were reported across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir since early Friday morning. In retaliation, Indian Army, too, opened fire across the Line of Control. According to reports, Pakistan Army violated ceasefire at multiple places in Nowgam area along the Line of Control in the North Kashmir's Kupwara district. Tensions between India and Pakistan has escalated since Tuesday, when Pakistan-based terror outfit killed 26 tourists at Baisaran near Pahalgam in South Kashmir.
It was reported that small arms were used by the Pakistani Army while targeting some locations on the Line of Control, which was effectively responded to by the Indian Army. The Indian security forces also destroyed houses of two Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists in Anantnag and Pulwama over the suspicion of their involvement in Pahalgam attack.
Meanwhile, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi reached Srinagar of Friday and held a security review meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. The army chief will review the security arrangement in the Union territory.
Following the terror attack in Pahalgam on Tuesday, India downgraded ties with Pakistan citing cross-border links in the attack. India suspended Indus Waters Treaty and cancelled visas issued to Pakistani nationals along with other measures. In retaliation, Pakistan on Thursday announced to keep bilateral agreements including Simla Agreement of 1972 with India in abeyance. The neigbouring country also suspended trade with India and closed its airspace for Indian owned or operated airlines.
MEETINGS IN DELHI
The corridors of Central secretariat in New Delhi were hustled with the back-to-back meetings in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack. Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with chief ministers of all the states, asking them to identify Pakistani nationals and send them back. The home minister also held meeting with Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to discuss ways to implement the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.
The government on Wednesday suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. The water-sharing agreement signed in 1960 between India and Pakistan was brokered by the World Bank. It allocated the use of the Indus River system, which includes six rivers--the eastern rivers Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej for India's unrestricted use and the western rivers Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab primarily for Pakistan, with India allowed limited non-consumptive uses like hydropower and irrigation.
Following the meeting, Patil told media that the government was working on short-term, medium-term, and long-term measures to ensure that not even a drop of water goes to Pakistan.
External Affairs Minister Jaishankar also held multiple meetings with Ambassadors of Israel, Argentina, Egypt and Nepal in wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.
Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan also held a meeting with chief secretaries of all the states through video conferencing over the suspension of visas issued to Pakistani nationals. He asked all chief secretaries to ensure strict compliance of these orders.
WORLD LEADERS DIAL MODI
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Netherlands Prime Minister Dick Schoof dialled Prime Minister Narendra Modi to condemn the Pahalgam terror attack. Starmer expressed that the UK stands with the people of India in this hour of tragedy.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake also called Prime Minister Modi to convey condolences and reaffirmed shared commitment to combat terrorism in all its forms.
CONGRESS' CANDLE MARCH
The Congress on Friday held a candlelight march to express solidarity with the victims of the terror attack. Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi visited Kashmir to meet injured tourists and take stock of the situation. He expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and said the Congress party stood by them in this hour of grief. End
