NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for several development projects of INR 134.80 billion in Bihar, where state elections are due later this year. He also flagged off the Amrit Bharat Express connecting Saharsa to Mumbai, and the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail between Jaynagar and Patna.
Speaking at an event in Madhubani, Bihar, to mark National Panchayati Raj Day, Modi reached out to backward communities, Dalits, and Pasmanda Muslims--groups that form a significant share of Bihar's electoral role. He highlighted that over 40 million permanent houses have been built across the country over the past decade, with 5.7 million of them benefiting poor families in Bihar under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The prime minister said the scheme has especially helped the poor, Dalits, backward classes, and Pasmanda Muslims. Modi also announced plans to construct an additional 30 million permanent houses in the coming years.
"120 million people have received tap water connections in the last 10 years across the country. Millions of people received electricity and gas connections. The foundation stone and inauguration of projects related to the development of the country and Bihar have been laid here today. These projects related to electricity, railways, and infrastructure will create new employment opportunities in Bihar," Modi said.
The prime minister also highlighted the persistent challenges of floods in Bihar's Mithila and Kosi regions. He said that the government will invest INR 110 billion to mitigate the impact of floods in Bihar.
"These investments will facilitate the construction of dams on rivers such as Bagmati, Dhar, Budhi Gandak, and Kosi. Canals will be developed, ensuring irrigation arrangements through river water. This initiative will not only reduce flood-related issues but will also ensure adequate water supply reaches every farmers' field," he added.
The prime minister laid the foundation stone for a liquefied petroleum gas bottling plant with a rail unloading facility at Hathua in Gopalganj valued at around INR 3.4 billion. The facility is expected to streamline the supply chain and enhance the efficiency of bulk LPG transportation.
To strengthen the region's power infrastructure, Modi also laid the foundation stone for projects worth over INR 11.70 billion and inaugurated several others totalling more than INR 50.30 billion under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, the government said. End
