--PM Modi: Pahalgam terror attack not just on tourists, but on country's soul

NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday vowed strong action against the terrorists and their backers involved in the massacre of at least 26 civilians on Tuesday in Pahalgam. The prime minister said the attack was not just on innocent tourists but on the soul of India.

Addressing a gathering at the Panchayati Raj day programme in Bihar's Madhubani, Modi said the entire nation is saddened by the brutality with which the terrorists killed civilians. At the beginning of his speech, the prime minister observed a moment of silence to pay homage to the victims of the attack. Modi, who was addressing the people in Hindi, switched his speech to English to give a message to the global community.

"Today, on the soil of Bihar, I say to the whole world, India will identify, trace and punish every terrorist and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the Earth. India's spirit will never be broken by terrorism. It will not go unpunished. Every effort will be made to make sure that justice is done," he said.

"The entire nation is one in this resolve. Everyone who believes in humanity is with us. I thank the people of various countries and their leaders who have stood with us," the prime minister said.

He assured the people that the terrorists and those who conspired to execute the Pahalgam attack would get a punishment bigger than they could imagine. "We stand with the families of the victims. The terrorists will not be spared, strong action will be taken against them," Modi said.

On Tuesday, at least 26 people were killed and 16 sustained injuries after terrorists shot at tourists in the Baisaran meadow near Pagalgam in South Kashmir. The survivors told the media that militants targetted individuals based on religion. The attackers came from the forest and vanished in the forests after the carnage. According to reports, the tourists were specifically shot in the head and chest. The attack was claimed by the Resistance Front, a designated proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist organisation.

On Wednesday, the prime minister convened a Cabinet Committee of Security meeting and took significant decisions against Pakistan in response to the attack. India has since suspended the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 with Pakistan and banned the entry of Pakistani nationals into India with immediate effect. The government also closed the integrated Attari check post with immediate effect and shrank the strength of the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi. End
