Heatwave in central, northwest India likely to continue till Tuesday - IMD

NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has extended its forecast for heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of east Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha. Heatwave conditions in these regions are now likely to continue till Tuesday, instead of the weather agency's earlier forecast of Monday. The department has also forecast heatwaves in parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand till Monday.
The bureau sees a gradual rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures in northwest India during the next seven days. However, no significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over Gujarat during the next five days. Temperatures in the state will, however, rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent two days.
A gradual rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures is also likely over east India during the next two days. No significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over the remaining parts of the country, the weather bureau said.
Warm night conditions are likely in isolated pockets throughout Bihar till Friday, over Odisha till Thursday, and over Gangetic West Bengal on Thursday and Friday, it said.
Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh till Sunday, while heavy rainfall is likely over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Wednesday and Friday, the weather agency said. A thundersquall with speeds of 50-60 km per hour is likely over Assam and Meghalaya on Tuesday.
Hot and humid weather is likely in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, as well as over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema till Saturday, a statement by the bureau said. Kerala, Mahe, and Gujarat will see similar weather till Thursday. Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathawada are likely to begin experiencing hot and humid weather from Tuesday.
Meanwhile, maximum temperatures on Monday were above normal and rose between 3.1 and 5.0 degrees Celsius at many places in Vidarbha, east Uttar Pradesh and parts of Gujarat and Kutch. Temperatures were also high in isolated places over west Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar. Above-normal temperatures were recorded in Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Punjab, and central Maharashtra, rising 1.6-3.0 degrees Celsius, the bureau said. End
