NEW DELHI - Members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the One Nation, One Election bills will begin a tour of all states on May 17 to gather public opinion on holding simultaneous elections, committee's Chairman and Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha member P.P. Chaudhary said on Tuesday. The committee members are scheduled to visit Maharashtra on May 17–18, followed by a visit to Uttarakhand from May 19–21, Chaudhary said.
The government had introduced the One Nation One Election bills – Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 – in the Lok Sabha in December and referred to the joint committee for wider consultation.
"The committee unanimously took the decision to visit all the states to hear the stakeholders concerned. Our Maharashtra tour is scheduled on May 17 followed by Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, and Chandigarh... We will hear legal luminaries, representatives of political parties, activists, former elections commissioners of that particular state, celebrities, and law-enforcement agencies. We would get to know about the economic aspect of one nation one election... We would also get to know about the feeling of common people and how the country would be benefited by simultaneous polls," Chaudhary told the media.
In March, the Lok Sabha extended the tenure of the Joint Parliamentary Committee until the final week of the Monsoon Session. The committee was initially expected to submit its report by Apr. 1.
The proposed Constitution amendment bill seeks to introduce provisions for holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. It also aims to amend articles related to the tenure of Parliament and state legislatures, as well as the authority of Parliament to legislate on matters concerning elections.
The bill provides that after its enactment, the President will issue a notification specifying the date of the first sitting of the Lok Sabha following a General Election, which will be designated as the appointed date. "The tenure of the House of the People shall be five years from that appointed date," according to the Statement of Objects and Reasons of the Bill. "The tenure of all assemblies, constituted by elections to the Legislative Assemblies after the appointed date and before the expiry of the full term of the House of the People, shall come to an end at the expiry of the full term of the House of the People."
