MUMBAI – India's natural gas import bill in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) rose 13.4% to $15.2 billion due to lower domestic production and a rise in consumption, the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell said in a report. In March, the import bill rose over 8% to $1.3 billion, the data further showed.
Gas imports in Apr-Mar rose 15.4% on year to 36.70 billion standard cubic metres. The country imported over 3 billion standard cubic metres of natural gas in March, down 0.3% on year, the data showed.
Domestic natural gas production fell nearly 1% on year to 36.1 billion standard cubic metres in FY25. In March, domestic natural gas production fell around 5% on year to nearly 3 billion standard cubic metres, the data showed. Lower domestic output of gas resulted in higher import dependency.
