In major bureaucratic reshuffle, finance ministry gets 4 new secretaries

NEW DELHI - As part of a slew of reshuffles at secretary-level postings in different ministries, the government on Friday appointed four new secretaries in the finance ministry. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet named Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam the new expenditure secretary and Additional Secretary at Prime Minister's Office Arvind Srivastava as the new revenue secretary.

 

The government also notified that Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs Anuradha Thakur will take over as the new economic affairs secretary on Jul. 1 after Ajay Seth's term comes to an end in June. Similarly, Additional Secretary in commerce ministry Rajesh Agarwal will assume charge as the new commerce secretary on Oct. 1 after Sunil Barthwal steps down on Sep. 30.

 

Vualnam is a 1992 batch Indian Administrative Services Officer from the Manipur cadre, while Srivastava is a 1994 batch IAS officer from Karnataka. Thakur and Agarwal are also 1994 batch IAS officers from Himachal Pradesh and Manipur cadres, respectively.

 

In the same notification, the government also announced that Secretary of Inter State Council Secretariat K. Moses Chalai will assume charge as the new department of public enterprises secretary, a position that has been vacant for many months now. Chalai is a 1990 batch IAS from the Manipur cadre.

 

The government also appointed Vandana Gurnani as the new labour secretary, a position that was being additionally staffed by Sports Secretary Sujata Chaturvedi after former labour secretary Sumita Dawra resigned in March. Gurnani was the secretary (coordination) in the Cabinet Secretariat.

 

The other announcements made on Friday include appointment of Director General of Directorate General of Foreign Trade Santosh Kumar Sarangi as the secretary of Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, and Additional Secretary in defence ministry Samir Kumar Sinha as the new civil aviation secretary. Both of them are 1994 batch officers.

 

The government also announced the appointment of Nikunja Bihari Dhal from the Odisha cadre as the new parliamentary affairs secretary, starting Jul. 1 and the Additional Secretary in NITI Aayog Nidhi Chhibber as food processing industries secretary from Jun. 1. Dhal is a 1993 batch IAS officer, while Chhibber is from 1994 batch.  End
