--ISMA: Optimistic about sugar output in 2025-26 season on good monsoon
NEW DELHI – Mills in India produced 25.5 million tonnes of sugar as of Tuesday, accounting for 99.6% of the production estimate for 2024-25 (Oct-Sept), the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association said Thursday. The trade body has pegged the net sugar output for the current season at 26.4 million tonnes, after diversion of 3.5 million tonnes for making ethanol. Last year, the country's sugar output was 31.90 million tonnes.
As of Tuesday, only 38 sugar mills, of the 534 total mills, were crushing in the country, ISMA said. "Around 22 factories are still operational in Uttar Pradesh. Out of which around 16 factories are operating in West UP," it said. These factories in Uttar Pradesh are expected to remain in operation till late April or May first week due to improved cane availability and yields, ISMA said.
As of Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh produced 9.1 million tonnes of sugar. "Sugar recovery has shown improvement in the second half of the season, resulting in better output," ISMA said.
In Maharashtra, sugar output was 8.1 million tonnes as of Tuesday. Of the 200 mills that started operations this season, only 1 mill in Pune is expected to remain in operation till the second week of May, ISMA said.
As of Tuesday, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat produced 4.0 million tonnes, 470,000 tonnes, and 886,000 tonnes, respectively. "It is worth noting that some factories in south Karnataka are expected to restart operations during the special season from June or July to September," ISMA said. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu collectively contribute around 400,000-500,000 tonnes of sugar in the special season, it added.
ISMA said it is optimistic about the sugar output in 2025-26 (Oct-Sep) due to projections of a normal southwest monsoon by the India Meteorological Department and Skymet. "This reinforces confidence in a favourable agro-climatic environment, supporting a healthy sugarcane crop and robust production potential for the 2025–26 season," ISMA said. End
