NEW DELHI – US Vice President J.D. Vance will visit India and hold discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on "shared economic and geopolitical priorities", a statement released by the White House said. Vance will travel to Italy and India from Apr. 18 to 24, the statement said.
During the meeting, the reciprocal tariffs and Bilateral Trade Agreement may come up for discussion, sources said. However, the external affairs ministry has not shared any details about the agenda of the meeting.
India has been pursuing a multi-sectoral Bilateral Trade Agreement with the US to avoid the reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods. Both the countries had agreed to negotiate on trade pact during Prime Minister Modi's US visit in February.
On Apr. 2, US President Donald Trump announced 26% discounted reciprocal tariffs on India. He, however, declared a 90-day pause on the implementation of the duties. The 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods, will come into effect on Jul. 9. The reciprocal tariffs could affect growth of Indian exports as the US is India's top export market with a share of over 15% in total exports. According to the US Trade Representative, India exported goods worth $87.4 billion to the US and had a trade surplus of $45.7 billion in 2024.
On Apr. 9, India's external affairs ministry had said that New Delhi is looking to expeditiously conclude the bilateral trade agreement with Washington.
Vance, who is the 50th vice president of the US, will visit Jaipur, New Delhi and Agra, the statement read. Vance along with his wife Usha and three children -- Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel, will participate in "engagements at cultural sites".
Before arriving in India, Vance will travel to Italy and hold meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Vance will also meet Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the statement said. End
