MUMBAI – The Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association on Wednesday said it is working closely with The Energy and Resources Institute and Deloitte to raise the industry's capacity to become a production hub for sustainable aviation fuel.

India could produce 19-24 million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel annually, much above the domestic needs, even under a 50% blending scenario, the association said in a release.

At a roundtable on 'Unlocking the potential of sustainable aviation fuel from sugar biorefineries', stakeholders highlighted the immense potential of India's sugar industry to produce potentially the lowest-carbon-intensity sustainable aviation fuel in the world using alcohol-to-jet technology, the release said.

"The success of India's Ethanol Blending Programme has shown that biofuels can transform both climate action and rural prosperity," ISMA Director General Deepak Ballani said. "SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) represents the next frontier—one that can create green jobs, boost farmer incomes, and support India's energy independence," Ballani said.  End
