NEW DELHI - Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal Wednesday met a delegation from Starlink, the Elon Musk-owned satellite internet services company, where he discussed the firm's investment plans in India. "Met a delegation from @Starlink, comprising of Vice President Chad Gibbs & Senior Director, Ryan Goodnight," Goyal said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

"Discussions covered Starlink's cutting-edge technology platform, their existing partnerships & future investment plans in India," he added.

Goyal's meeting with Starlink officials comes a month after the company signed pacts with two of India's biggest telecommunication companies, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Industries' Jio Platforms, to offer broadband internet services in India.

The meeting is also important because Starlink's owner Musk is part of US President Donald Trump's administration, which has levied tariffs on its trading partners, including a 26% duty on India, before it was suspended for 90 days on Apr. 9. India and the US are currently working on a bilateral trade agreement.

Starlink delivers high-speed, low-latency internet to users all over the world. As the world's first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit, Starlink delivers broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and more. Starlink is engineered and operated by SpaceX.

SpaceX is yet to receive authorisations to sell Starlink in India. Airtel and Jio will provide Starlink's internet services through their retail outlets as well as through online storefronts.  End
