--Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna names Justice Gavai as his successor

NEW DELHI – Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on Wednesday recommended the appointment of Justice B.R. Gavai as his successor in the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Khanna is due to retire on May 13 after a tenure of about six months as the Chief Justice. Justice Gavai will become the 52nd Chief Justice of India after his appointment is approved by the government.

Gavai had joined the Bar in 1985 and practised constitutional and administrative law. He was the standing counsel for the Municipal Corporation of Nagpur, Amravati Municipal Corporation, and Amravati University. Thereafter, he was appointed assistant government pleader and additional public prosecutor in the Bombay High Court from August 1992 to July 1993.

Gavai was elevated as an additional judge of the high court in 2003 and became its permanent judge in 2005. He had presided over benches having all types of assignments at the principal seat in Mumbai, as well as benches in Nagpur, Aurangabad and Panaji in the Bombay High Court.

Gavai became a judge of the top court in 2019 and is slated to retire on Nov. 23, 2025. After former judge K.G. Balakrishnan, who became the chief justice in 2007, Justice Gavai will be the second dalit to hold the position. As a judge, Justice Gavai was involved in the verdict upholding the government's 2016 demonetisation scheme and the judgement that declared the electoral bond scheme unconstitutional. Justice Gavai was also involved in the verdict that upheld the abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which conferred special status on the erstwhile state of Jammu & Kashmir.  End
