NEW DELHI – The US administration announced Tuesday that China will now face up to 245% tariffs on imports to the US as a result of Beijing's retaliation on reciprocal tariffs imposed earlier this month by President Donald Trump.
In a factsheet released by the White House, it said that China faces up to 245% tariff. However, it did not disclose the list of goods impacted by the latest tariffs.
"On Liberation Day, President Trump imposed a 10% tariff on all countries and individualized reciprocal higher tariffs on nations... More than 75 countries have already reached out to discuss new trade deals. As a result, the individualized higher tariffs are currently paused amid these discussions, except for China, which retaliated. China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the United States as a result of its retaliatory actions," the factsheet said.
The White House statement noted China's ban on the export of key rare earth metals essential for the aerospace and semiconductor industry. "Just this week, China suspended exports of six heavy rare earth metals, as well as rare earth magnets, in order to choke off supplies of components central to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world," the factsheet said.
China also banned exports of gallium, germanium, antimony and other key high-tech materials with potential military application to the US a few months ago, the factsheet reads.
Responding to the latest US tariff, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian said Wednesday that the tariff war was started by the US and China has taken necessary counter measures in order to defend its legitimate rights and interest.
"China's position is very clear. China doesn't want to fight these wars but it's not scared of them. If US truly wants to resolve the issue through dialogues and negotiation it will stop threat and blackmail," Lin Jian said during a media briefing. For any dialogue to happen, it must be based on equality, respect and mutual benefit, he added.
Earlier, the US had slapped 145% tariff on China, to which Beijing retaliated with 125% tariff on US goods, leading to further escalation of the trade war.
On Apr. 2, the US president announced discounted reciprocal tariffs on countries to address what he perceived as "unfair trade practices" by other countries and to reduce the US trade deficit. He imposed a 10% tariff on all counties and individualised reciprocal tariffs on the nations with the US has high trade deficits. He levied a 26% duty on goods imported from India. Trump also imposed tariffs on various other countries, including China (32%), the European Union (20%), Vietnam (46%), Japan (24%), the UK (10%), Indonesia (32%), and Taiwan (32%).
While India and most other countries didn't retaliate, China responded with retaliatory tariffs of 34% on US goods. Trump then increased duties on Chinese goods to 104%. Refusing to bend, China on Wednesday increased tariffs on the US to 84%. End
