MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for west Rajasthan on Wednesday due to severe heatwave and an orange alert for heatwave in east Rajasthan. These weather conditions are expected to prevail in most parts of Rajasthan during the week, the weather bureau said.

It also said isolated dust storm or thunderstorm is likely over west Rajasthan on Wednesday and over east Rajasthan on Thursday. It expects warm nights over parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh this week.

Gujarat is likely have heatwave till Thursday, along with hot and humid weather. Kerala, Mahe, Marathwada, and central Maharashtra are likely to see hot and humid weather on Thursday and Sunday.

While a heatwave is declared when the actual maximum temperature is 45 degrees Celsius or more, a severe heatwave is when the temperature is 47 degrees Celsius or higher. A red alert means severe heatwave has prevailed in a place for over two days, leading to a very high likelihood of heat illness and heatstrokes.

The weather bureau has advised people exposed to sun for a long period to keep cool and stay hydrated. It also said there was high health concern for infants, elderly, and people with chronic diseases, and asked that exposing onself to heat be avoided.

A gradual rise of 2-4 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures is likely over northwest India in the next three days, with a gradual fall of 2-3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent three to four days. The weather bureau said a gradual rise of 2-3 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures over central India is likely during the next four days, and no significant change is expected in the subsequent three days.  End
