India March gems, jewellery exports $1.84 bln, up 8.8% on year

MUMBAI – India's gems and jewellery net exports rose 8.8% on year to $1.84 billion in March, while net imports fell 7.2% on year to $1.94 billion, according to data from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council. The export of gems and jewellery on a gross basis rose 1% on year to $2.58 billion in March.

 

The country's net gems and jewellery exports in the financial year ended March contracted 10.5% to $23.30 billion, while gross exports declined to $28.5 billion from $32.28 billion a year ago. Net imports in the last financial year fell 12% to $19.61 billion, the data showed.

 

India exported 1.55 million carats of cut and polished diamonds in March, down from 1.61 million carats a year ago. Exports of cut and polished diamonds in 2024-25 were 16.65 million carats, down from 18.92 million carats in the previous year.

 

The country's import of rough diamonds in March rose to 13.83 million carats from 10.67 million carats a year ago. Imports of rough diamonds in 2024-25 fell to 104.43 million carats from 124.62 million carats a year ago, the data showed.

 

Silver jewellery exports in March dropped 21.5% on year to $63.37 million. Silver jewellery exports in 2024-25 plummetted 40.6% to $961.79 million.

 

India imported gold bars worth $404.55 million in March, up 92.3% from a year ago, the data showed. Imports of gold bars in 2024-25 soared 44.2% to $4.14 billion. The country imported $24.83 million of gold jewellery in March, down from $194.86 million a year ago, while imports of gold jewellery in 2024-25 fell 8.2% to $956.15 million.
