NEW DELHI - Growth of automobile despatches to dealerships overseas continued to outpace domestic performance in March and in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers on Tuesday showed. The 7.3% on-year rise in India's wholesale sales in FY25 was led by robust two-wheeler despatches, even as passenger vehicle sales barely grew.

Companies sold 19.61 million two-wheelers to domestic dealerships in FY25, 9.1% higher on year. Two-wheeler sales formed nearly 77% of the overall sales in last financial year, around 120 basis points higher than in FY24, showcasing Indians' increasing appetite for two-wheelers. Sales in rural areas growing at a quicker pace than their urban counterparts likely benefited this segment.

All sub-segments within two-wheelers reported growth in FY25, but scooter sales accelerated brisker than the others. Scooter wholesale sales in FY25 stood at 6.85 million units, 17% higher on year. Despatches of motorcycles, the most preferred two-wheeler sub-segment in India, were 12.25 million in FY25, 5.1% higher on year while mopeds' sales grew 4.2% to 501,813 units.

Overall, companies sold 25.61 million units to Indian dealers in FY25, up 7.3% on year, while export wholesale sales grew 19% to 5.36 million units.

Passenger vehicle sales in FY25 increased only 2% on year to 4.30 million units as passenger car sales continued to grow at the expense of larger utility vehicles - in India and abroad. Companies sold 1.35 million passenger cars to dealers in FY25, sharply down 13% on year. Exports of passenger cars fell 7.2% on year to 398,879 units.

In sharp contrast, domestic utility vehicle sales in FY25 rose 11% on year to 2.78 million units. Companies sold 362,160 utility vehicles overseas, up 54% from FY24. Overall passenger vehicle exports increased to 770,364 units, up 15% on year.

Despatches of three-wheelers in FY25 rose to 741,420 units, 6.7% higher on year. Sales of passenger carriers, which form the bulk of the overall segment, stood at 601,642 units in FY25, 10% higher than in FY24. Goods carriers' sales increased 5.1% on year to 117,156 units in FY25. Despatches of electric rickshaws fell substantially by 41% to 18,474 units in the last fiscal.

In what was a difficult year, despatches of commercial vehicles in India declined 1.2% on year to 956,671 units in FY25. Sales of medium-heavy commercial vehicles remained nearly unchanged from a year ago, at 373,819 units. Companies sold 582,852 light commercial vehicles in India in FY25, 2% lower on year. Demand for commercial vehicles fell in India, but exports grew at a staggering 23% on year to 80,986 units in FY25.

Around 1.97 million electric vehicles were registered in FY25, 16.9% higher on year. In FY25, registration of electric passenger vehicles grew 18.2% on year, while those of two-wheelers and three-wheelers grew 21.2% and 10.5%, respectively.

MARCH SALES

In March, Indian automobile companies sold 2.05 million units to dealers in India, up 10% on year, while exports stood at 471,076 units, up 13.8%. Production lagged the sales growth, as output by companies in March stood at 2.48 million units, 6.5% higher on year.

Among all categories, domestic despatches of passenger vehicles grew at the slowest rate in March, up 3.75 on year at 329,742 units. Export growth was markedly higher, as companies sold 77,176 cars overseas, up 25%. Exports of utility vehicles in March were up 70.7% on year at 41,086 units. On the face of increasing demand, companies made 19% more utility vehicles than they did the year before, at 261,255 units. Overall, companies manufactured 423,005 passenger vehicles in March, up 11.2%.

Last month, companies sold 1.66 million two-wheelers to dealerships in India, 11% higher on year. Abroad, companies sold 364,812 units, up 12%. Scooter sales in India grew 26% to 586,485 units, while exports tumbled 23% to 33,817 units. Motorcycle despatches in India grew only 6% to 1.04 million units, while their exports grew 16% to 329,087 units. Production of two-wheelers increased 6% to 1.97 million units.

Three-wheeler sales in March stood at 62,813 units, 11% higher on year, while exports grew to 28,908 units, up 19% on year. The output of three-wheelers grew 6% on year to 87,219 units. Companies sold 49,762 passenger carriers in March, 16% higher on year, even as sales of goods carriers remained subdued at 11,590 units.

JAN-MAR SALES

Despatches of automobile units in the final quarter of FY25 (Jan-Mar) grew at a paltry 1.8% on year to 6.18 million units, dragged by a marked weakness in two-wheeler and commercial vehicle segments. Exports sharply outpaced domestic sales growth as companies sold 1.43 million units abroad, up 23% on year. Output grew 5.7% on year to 7.82 million units in Jan-Mar.

Companies sold 4.57 million two-wheelers to dealers in India in the March quarter, up only 1.4% even as exports grew 24% on year to 1.14 million units. Domestic three-wheeler sales grew 8% on year to 178,768 units while their exports increased 12.4% to 78,791 units.

Passenger vehicle despatches in India in the latest quarter were up only 2.4% at 1.16 million units. Exports of this category increased to 1.93 million units, up 16% on year. Commercial vehicle sales didn't fare any better, as weaker light commercial vehicle sales dragged down overall domestic despatches of this category to 272,990 units, up only 1.5% on year. Exports grew at a much more rapid clip as companies shipped 23,515 commercial vehicles abroad, 56% higher on year.

GROWTH OUTLOOK

Going ahead, SIAM expects the growth momentum in FY25 across all segments of the automobile industry to continue in FY26 as well, "... building on the robust performance of recent years due to stable macroeconomic conditions, proactive government policies, and infrastructure spending by the Government," the lobby body said in a statement.

Along with the personal income tax cut announced in the Union Budget, a normal monsoon, as forecast for 2025, is expected to support broader economic activity in India, especially in the rural and semi-urban regions. "Export demand in key markets of interest, such as Africa and neighbouring countries, is likely to continue as 'Made in India' vehicles are gaining traction," SIAM said.
