NEW DELHI – The Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam will contest the Tamil Nadu assembly elections scheduled next year in alliance, Home Minister and senior BJP leader Amit Shah said on Friday in Chennai. He also said that former chief minister and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami will be the face of alliance in Tamil Nadu.
"The AIADMK and the BJP leaders have decided that the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections will be contested together under the banner of National Democratic Alliance," Shah said. He expressed confidence that the NDA will get full majority in the southern state and form the government.
"Seat sharing and ministerial berths discussion will be held later," the home minister said, adding that corruption, law and order, women safety and atrocities on Dalit community will be the primary poll issues for the NDA in the state.
Shah also slammed the ruling-Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for raking up issues of three-language policy and Sanatan Dharma to divert attention from real issues.
The elections to 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly are scheduled in Mar-Apr next year. In 2021, the elections were held on Apr. 6. The DMK won 133 seats and the Secular Progressive Alliance of DMK, Congress, Communist Party of India, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Communist Party of India (Marxist) formed government with 159 seats in its tally. On other side, the NDA comprising AIADMK, BJP and Pattali Makkal Katchi won 75 seats with AIADMK winning 66 and BJP getting four seats. End
