NEW DELHI – India has withdrawn trans-shipment facility it had extended to Bangladesh in 2020, citing significant congestion at Indian airports and ports as the reason. These measures do not impact Bangladesh's export to Nepal and Bhutan transiting through Indian territory, the Ministry of External Affairs said.

"The trans-shipment facility extended to Bangladesh resulted in significant congestion at our airports and ports. Logistical delays and higher costs were hindering our own exports and creating backlogs. Therefore, the facility has been withdrawn effective April 8, 2025," External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Wednesday during weekly press briefing of the ministry.

On Tuesday, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs issued a notification rescinding a 2020 circular, which had provided for trans-shipment of export cargo from Bangladesh destined to third countries through land customs to ports and airports.

"It has been decided to rescind the aforesaid Circular No. 29/2020-Customs dated 29.06.2020, as amended with immediate effect. Cargo already entered into India may be allowed to exit the Indian territory as per procedure given in the Circular No. 29/2020- Customs," CBIC circular issued on Tuesday read.  End
