Govt proposes centre of excellence for BIMSTEC nations; focus on farming, AI

MUMBAI – The government has proposed establishment of a centre of excellence to strengthen cooperation among countries under the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said in a release Wednesday. The centre will focus on precision agriculture, mitigating climate risk, natural farming, gender equality, and artificial intelligence, it said.

 

"BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) has the potential to connect South and Southeast Asia. We have a shared history and a rich cultural heritage that makes us natural partners," Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, addressing the third BIMSTEC Agriculture Ministerial Meeting in Kathmandu.

 

Chouhan reiterated India's commitment to strengthen agricultural cooperation within BIMSTEC and noted that the country has taken initiative under BIMSTEC Agriculture Cooperation (2023-2027) by organising trainings and workshops in the field of seed development, animal health, and pest management.  End
