--Cabinet OKs INR 16-bln for modernisation of irrigation facilities
MUMBAI – The Union Cabinet has approved modernisation of command area development and water management as a sub-scheme of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana for 2025-26 with an initial outlay of INR 16 billion, it said in a release on Wednesday. The scheme aims to modernise the irrigation water supply network from canals or other sources in a designated cluster, according to the press release.
The initial approval is for taking up pilot projects across various agroclimatic zones in the country by challenge funding to states. Based on the learnings in design and structuring of these projects, the National Plan for Command Area Development and Water Management will be launched from April 2026 for the 16th Finance Commission period, according to the release.
It will make robust backend infrastructure for micro-irrigation by farmers from established source to the farm gate up to 1 hactare with underground pressurised piped irrigation, it said. The projects will be made sustainable by irrigation management transfer to the water user society for management of irrigation assets.
The government will also support the water user societies for linking them with existing entities such as farmers producer organisations or primary agriculture cooperative societies for five years, the release said. End
