NEW DELHI – Since the government allowed exports of sugar in January, mills shipped 287,204 tonnes of sugar to 10 nations as of Tuesday, the All India Sugar Trade Association said on Wednesday. In January, the government had allowed mills to ship 1 million tonnes by September and so far, mills have dispatched 28.7% of the quota.
The sugar marketing season in India runs from October to September.
Of the 287,204 tonnes of sugar exported, the lion's share is white sugar at 214,681 tonnes, followed by 57,027 tonnes of refined sugar, and 15,496 tonnes of raw sugar the association said, quoting data from Mumbai-based trading house Dr. Amin Controllers Pvt. Ltd.
Of the total sugar exports, 18% was to Somalia, 17% to Afghanistan, 16% to Sri Lanka, and 11% to Libya. About 17,837 tonnes of sugar was at Indian ports, waiting to be loaded, as of Tuesday, the trade body said. Mills have contracted about 730,000 tonnes of sugar with trade houses so far, Praful Vithalani, chairman of the association, told Informist.
The pace of sugar exports from India is slow, but is expected to pick up in a month, the association said. The impact of falling crude prices on sugar rates has to be seen, it added. Falling crude oil prices discourages sugar diversion for biofuel production, increasing sugar availability.
Amid lower sugar production in the country, there were concerns over exports. However, New Delhi is set to maintain the 1-million-tonne sugar export quota amid ample supplies, Bloomberg reported.
The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories has estimated sugar production in the country to fall 17.3% on year to 25.9 million tonnes in the sugar season ending September. Last year, the country's sugar output was 31.90 million tonnes.
The 2024-25 season opened with an ample carryover of 8 million tonnes of sugar, and with about 26 million tonnes of production this year, India's sugar availablity is seen comfortable at around 34 million tonnes. India needs about 28 million tonnes for domestic consumption. Even with 1 million tonnes shipped out for exports, the 2024-25 sugar season is likely to close with an ending stock of 5 million tonnes.
