--Cabinet OKs INR 13.32 bln for railway line for Tamil Nadu, Andhra

NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved the doubling of the Tirupati–Pakala–Katpadi single railway line section in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu at a total cost of INR 13.32 billion. The government said the project covering three districts in two states would increase the existing network of Indian Railways by about 113 kilometres and the route length would be 104 kilometres.

The multi-tracking project will enhance connectivity to nearly 400 villages and a population of about 1.4 million, the government said.

"This is an essential route for transportation of commodities such as coal, agricultural commodities, cement and other minerals etc. The capacity augmentation work will result in additional freight traffic of magnitude 4 MTPA (million tonnes per annum)," the government said in a statement.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the project would enhance connectivity to the educational and medical hubs of Vellore in Tamil Nadu and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh. Along with connectivity to the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, the project section also provides rail connectivity to other prominent destinations such as Sri Kalahasti Shiva Temple, Kanipakam Vinayaka Temple, and Chandragiri Fort., attracting pilgrims and tourists from across the country, the government said.  End
