--Cabinet OKs INR 18.78 bln for 6-lane Zirakpur bypass
NEW DELHI - The government on Wednesday approved the construction of a six-lane bypass in Zirakpur, with a total length of 19.2 kilometre across Punjab and Haryana. The project is estimated to cost INR 18.78 billion.
This decision was taken during a Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as part of efforts to enhance integrated transport infrastructure under the PM Gatishakti National Master Plan.
According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Zirakpur Bypass will begin at the junction with National Highway-7--Chandigarh-Bathinda--in Zirakpur and terminates at the junction with National Highway-5--Zirakpur-Parwanoo--in Panchkula, Haryana. The road will bypass the congested and urbanised stretch of Zirakpur in Punjab and Panchkula in Haryana. The main aim of the project is to reduce congestion in these areas and nearby regions by diverting traffic from Patiala, Delhi, and Mohali Aerocity while providing direct connectivity to Himachal Pradesh, the ministry said.
"Government has taken up decongestion of Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali urban agglomeration with development of road network which would take shape of ring road. The Zirakpur bypass is an important component of this plan," the ministry said in a statement. End
