NEW DELHI - Beijing on Tuesday called for strong cooperation between India and China to overcome the challenges posed by the US' reciprocal tariffs imposed on various countries.

"Facing the US abuse of tariffs, which deprives countries, especially Global South countries, of their right to development, the two largest developing countries should stand together to overcome the difficulties. China-India economic and trade relationship is based on complimentarity and mutual benefit," Yu Jing, the Chinese spokesperson in Delhi, posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The spokesperson said that China was a firm defender of economic globalisation and multilateralism, which have injected strong impetus into the world economy, contributing to around 30% of global growth annually on average. "Trade and tariff wars have no winners. All countries should uphold the principles of extensive consultation, practice true multilateralism, jointly oppose all forms of unilateralism and protectionism," Jing said, adding that Beijing would continue to work with the rest of the world to safeguard the multilateral trade system.

US President Donal Trump has announced a total 104% tariff on China and 26% duties on goods imported from India.

"104% tariffs on China will come into effect by April 9. If China reaches out to make a deal, it will be incredibly gracious but he (Trump) will still do what is best for American people," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a press briefing. She said that 70 countries had approached the Trump administration to negotiate on tariffs.

On Monday, Trump threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese goods effective Wednesday if Beijing failed to remove the 34% retaliatory tariffs imposed on imports from the US. Last week, Trump had imposed 34% tariff on Chinese goods, in addition to the 20% imposed earlier, taking the total tariff to 104%.

Meanwhile, India has refrained from taking any countermeasures in response to the US tariffs. It has attempted to placate Trump by reducing import duties on Harley-Davidson motorcycles as well as bourbon whiskey. India is also negotiating a multi-sectoral bilateral trade agreement with the US  End
