MUMBAI – The Solvent Extractors' Association of India has urged the government to reinstate standard pack sizes for edible oils and similar commodities as per the original second schedule, it said in a release Tuesday. Lack of standardisation leads to pricing opacity, discourages like-to-like comparisons, and undermines trust, particularly since oils are commonly sold below the maximum retail price, according to the release.

With the omission of the second schedule under the packaged commodities rules, 2022, the mandate for standardized pack sizes has been removed. This has led to a proliferation of non-standard oil packs of 800g, 810g, 850g, 870g, and more, resulting in consumer confusion and distorted price comparisons, the release said.

Due to several near-identical pack sizes, customers struggle to make informed choices, especially since label details are often overlooked and USP alone doesn't clearly highlight value differences.

Packs with marginally different quantities often appear similar, misleading consumers and pushing industry players into unhealthy competition based on slight grammage variations rather than value, the association said. Hence, a standardising edible oil packaging by weight is essential to ensure transparency, protect consumer interests, maintain market integrity and create a level-playing field for industry players, it said.  End
